Halifax, NS – Today marks the successful conclusion of engaging discussions amongst democratic thinkers at the 2013 Halifax International Security Forum. For the past three days, democratic leaders, business leaders, military strategists, security experts and members of the media joined together in an intimate setting to discuss international relations and pressing security challenges.

“Through our discussions at Halifax, a community of like-minded thinkers has advanced a unique vision of security that inspires real action towards international peace and prosperity,” said the Honourable Rob Nicholson, Minister of National Defence. “The Halifax International Security Forum is the preeminent security forum for democratic thinkers and a valuable foreign policy tool.”

The Government of Canada announced it will continue its generous support to the Halifax International Security Forum for another five years with a $9.8 million investment. The Government of Canada is one of many generous sponsors, including the Halifax Canada Club and the Forum’s media partner, Foreign Affairs. Through these sponsorships, the Halifax International Security Forum has established a worldwide reputation for excellence and seamless logistics.

“Over five years, the Halifax International Security Forum has transitioned into a seminal event on the calendars of international leaders and local businesses,” said the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada and Regional Minister for Nova Scotia. “I thank the Halifax International Security Forum for their commitment to bettering this Forum every year and their commitment to growing the unique Halifax conversation.”

This year’s forum featured 300 participants from 50 countries. The agenda for the conference reflected the security issues and opportunities faced by democratic nations in 2013 and helped shape the strategic thinking of participants heading into the new year.

“The Halifax International Security Forum is developing a network of thinkers who critically challenge and support one another as they navigate the relative strengths of their respective positions and opinions, all while maintaining an unwavering commitment to the principles of democratic governance,” said Peter Van Praagh, President of the Halifax International Security Forum. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the success of the fifth annual Halifax International Security Forum.”
