Washington, DC – The Halifax International Security Forum today announced the appointment of Janice Gross Stein as Chair of the Forum’s Board of Directors.

“We are very proud and excited to have someone of Ms. Stein’s stature helm our organization and look forward to working with her as we enter our thirteenth year,” said Forum President Peter Van Praagh.

“Ms. Stein’s deep knowledge and expertise in the world of politics, academia and international relations will serve the Forum well as we get ready for our next meeting in Halifax and in the years to come.”

Mr. Van Praagh took the opportunity to thank Mr. Jonathan Weisstub, outgoing chair, for ten years of dedication and service to the board and praised Mr. Weisstub’s contribution to making the Forum world-renowned during that time.

“I am delighted to take up this new role,” said Ms. Stein from her home in Toronto. “Halifax International Security Forum is an important asset for Canada and during these uncertain times, we need it more than ever.”

Ms. Stein is Belzberg Professor of Conflict Management in the Department of Political Science and the Founding Director of the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto.

Ms. Stein is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and an Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Halifax International Security Forum is a non-partisan, non-profit, non-governmental organization that runs North America’s leading foreign affairs and defense conference. Its mission is to strengthen strategic cooperation among the world’s democracies. The conference will take place this year on November 20-22.
