HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA – President of the Halifax International Security Forum, Peter Van Praagh, joined Canadian Minister of National Defence, The Hon. Harjit Sajjan, to officially close the 8th annual Forum this afternoon in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

“Thanks to Minister Sajjan and the continued support of the Government of Canada, this was the most successful Halifax International Security Forum to date. We hosted participants from 70 countries and had large delegations from the U.S. Congress, Europe and Asia,” said Van Praagh. “As always, our conversations were topical, engaging and very frank. That’s what makes the Forum a must attend for the world’s democracies.”

Participants at the 2016 Halifax International Security Forum tackled a wide range of issues, from the impact of the presidential election on American foreign policy, the conflict in Syria, Russia’s plans in Europe, and the links between climate and security.”

“Relationships, collaboration and understanding are important keys to making the world a safer place,” said Minister Sajjan. “This weekend gave Canada the opportunity to explain our plan to take a more active role in peacekeeping and to underline this government’s continued support for our allies.”

Halifax International Security Forum is an independent, non-profit, non-partisan organization based in Washington, DC. The Forum is made possible by the generous support of its partners, including the Government of Canada’s Department of National Defence and the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.
