US FOREIGN POLICY AND CHINA TOP HFX2020 AGENDA

HALIFAX, NS — Halifax International Security Forum (HFX), the preeminent gathering of leaders committed to strengthening strategic cooperation among democracies, today highlighted some of the key speakers at this year’s discussions to be held November 20-22.

Participants from more than 80 democratic countries will hear from Canada’s Minister of National Defence, Harjit Sajjan; United States Secretary of State, Michael R. Pompeo; NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg; Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH); Senator Chris Coons (D-DE); US Navy Secretary Kenneth Braithwaite; General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Admiral Philip Davidson, Commander of United States Indo-Pacific Command; and General John Raymond, Chief of Space Operations, US Space Force.

HFX, now in its 12th year, is the first major gathering of defense and security leaders since the United States presidential election.

China’s increasingly antagonistic foreign policy stance and what democracies can do about it will be a key topic at HFX2020. Taking part in those discussions will, amongst others, be the former chairperson of the Democratic Party of Hong Kong, Emily Lau; Ai Weiwei, human rights activist and artist; and Dolkun Isa, President of the World Uyghur Congress. China vs Democracy: The Greatest Game, a handbook outlining the collective approach that the world’s democracies can take to counter Xi Jinping’s global ambitions, will also be released at HFX2020.

Other speakers include – Kersti Kaljulaid, President, Republic of Estonia; Artis Pabriks, Minister of Defence, Latvia; Radmila Shekerinska, Minister of Defense, North Macedonia; Liam Fox, former United Kingdom Secretary of Defence and International Trade Secretary; Stuart Peach, Chairman of the Military Committee, NATO; Rob Bauer, Chief of Defence, Netherlands Armed Forces; Rajmund Andrzejczak, Chief of Defense, Poland; and Angus Campbell, Chief of Defence, Australia.

The complete HFX2020 Agenda will be released on Thursday, November 19th.
