Canada Unveils New Defence Policy
June 8, 2017

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Canadian Minister of National Defence Harjit S. Sajjan released Canada’s new defence policy yesterday, entitled Strong, Secure, Engaged. This policy announcement is the culmination of more than a year’s worth of consultation with domestic and international defence and security experts, as well as Canadians themselves.

Minister Sajjan issued the following statement upon the release of Strong, Secure, Engaged:

“Strong, Secure, Engaged will shape Canada’s role in the world for years to come. Canada will be strong at home – ready to act in the service of Canadians; secure in North America through a renewed defence partnership in NORAD and with the United States; and engaged in the world – able to make concrete and positive contributions on the international stage.”

Peter Van Praagh, President of Halifax International Security Forum, issued the following statement regarding the new defence policy:

“Halifax International Security Forum congratulates Minister Sajjan and the Department of National Defence on this important work. We are proud to have contributed our viewpoints and analysis to the policy review process, and to have introduced Minister Sajjan’s Advisory Panel to a bipartisan group of American security experts.”

“Halifax International Security Forum welcomes this update to Canada’s defence policy and we look forward to continuing our important work together with the Department of National Defence.”
